Day Four - Day Trip to Edinburgh

We left Moffat early on Tuesday morning to head to Edinburgh for the day. The return was to be late at night. First stop was at the Royal Yacht Britannia - now permanently moored, and preserved for the public to see. Then it was on to Edinburgh Castle, a walk down the Royal Mile, and a late night arrival back in Moffat

Heading out of Moffat up towards the view over "The Devil's Beef Tub", and the point on the road where the mailmen perished in a storm while taking the mail through to Edinburgh. A view back towards Moffat which is out of picture to the right. Tourists at the viewing area for "The Devil's Beef Tub".

The Devil's Beef Tub - a place where in centuries past borrowed cattle were "hidden". Our red coach stopped while we carry out our tourist duties. The George Moffat women, with the Beef Tub in the background.

The sharp end of Britannia. View of the port side of Britannia. It's now permanently moored in Edinburgh and open to tourists and visitors. Lisa standing beside "The Royal Barge".

This boat was carried by the Britannia, and used by Her Majesty to go ashore from the Britannia.

Somewhere in Edinburgh - sorry I forget where now. Big buses at a small roundabout. Approaching Princes Street, with a view up to Edinburgh Castle.

From a few feet, and a couple of traffic light sequences, looking along Princes Street. I "think" this is the Royal Bank of Scotland building. The Sir Walter Scott Monument on Princes Street, looking toward railway stationi which is on the right.

Lisa in front of the Sir Walter Scott Monument, which we later climbed to the top of - some 250 steps, some of which were very narrow on a very tight spiral. A large building with a statue of the Duke of Wellington outside it. Deacon Brodie's Tavern.

The Chapel at Edinburgh Castle - almost like a castle within a castle. A view from further up in the Castle.

Looking along a row of cannons high in the battlements of the castle. Inside the Great Hall - sorry it's blurry. The other end of the Great Hall.

Back out in the Courtyard/Car Park.

Construction crews are putting up the seating in readiness for the Edinburgh Military Tattoo which is held at the Castle each August.

The kitset that makes up the seating stands. Don't let a small thing like a statue get in the way - just build the stands over it.

Lokinig down the Royal Mile, which runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Castle. A little further down the Royal Mile. Parliament Square on the Royal Mile - at this time the scene of a movie set, wtih a WW II barrage balloon being inflated, and actors as Wardens, and WACs standing around.

The same scene, minus the modern day traffic and crowd. One for Nova Scotia John Moffat - chalk drawn bill boards for Auld Reekies underground and medieval tours. From the lower end of the Royal Mile, just off on a side street.

Another composite photo (ain't computers great) from down the Royal Mile, not so far from Holyrood. On the fence surrounding the construction site that is for the new Scottish Parliament. This drawing is from the children of the Moffat Academy, and was one of many many hundreds of such drawings from schools all around Scotland. The gate to Holyrood Castle.

Holyrood Castle at the lower end of the Royal Mile.

Alas we arrived here just at closing so could only step inside the gate for these photos then had to leave.

This photo is a composite of two photos.

Holyrood Castle from the northern side. A view of Sir Walter Scott's monument across the park. Lisa and I (and others from the Moffat Clan) climbed the 260 or so steps, some of them in very small cramped passageways, to near the top of this - fantastic views from the top!!!!!!

From the top of the Scott monument, looking over the train station, with North Sea in the background. What was at one time Scotland's smallest school in the foreground.

The school is now closed, although the desks, chairs, books etc remain in the small room.

A closer view from the non road side of the school building.
