"The Great Gathering"

Moffat, Scotland - June 2000

Welcome to the "Photo Diary" of Lisa and Roger's trip to Moffat, Scotland for "The Great Gathering" called by Madam Jean Moffat of that Ilk for June 2000.

Day One - This started on Friday 9 June and ended quite some number of hours later with the evening of Saturday 10 June.

We left Grand Rapids, MI about 4 PM on Friday to fly to Detroit, then on to Amsterdam overnight arriving there about 0630 local time and then to Edinburgh, arriving there around 0730. We met up with a few others who'd been on the same flight and then waited until the main coningent arrived in between 1000 - 1100.

The coach was there to take us to Moffat. We checked in and then checked out the town in the afternoon, and then got ready for the Clan Chief's Reception on Saturday evening at the Moffat House Hotel. 156 (or so) people had travelled from the US for this Gathering, plus Teddy from Argentina.

Day Two - Sunday. Started out with a Church parade with Moffat Pipe Band leading the way down High Street, followed by a Church Service, and lunch provided by the Church people.

Day Three - Monday. Guide Jan took us off on a coach tour of the Borders, which included stops at Sir Walter Scott's house "Abbortsford", Melrose Abbey and the Locherby Memorial to those who perished in the explosion of flight Pan Am 103 over Locherbie.

In the evening we went the Old Well Theatre to see a local production of "The Odd Couple" - it had a twist - the characters were all female. Very funny!!!

Day Four - Tuesday. We left out of Moffat sort of early in the coach to Edinburgh for the day. Stops included a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia which is now on permanent display in the harbour. Then up to Edinburgh Castle where there was nowhere near enough time to see everything. Then "unaccompanied" we headed off down the Royal Mile eventually to Holyrood Castle, back to Princes St and a climb up the 260 or so steps to the top of the Walter Scott Monument. Then the coach ride back to Moffat arriving back in daylight at 1030 PM

Day Five - Wednesday was a leisurely day spent in and around the town of Moffat. In the morning we had a guided tour of the town with one of the locals.

Day Six - Thursday was a free day, and Lisa and I took advantage of the nice weather to take a walk outside Moffat to the Moffat Well, back over the Gallows Hill to Beechgrove, and then to the Woollen Mill in the afternoon.

Evening Six - On the Thursday evening, the Clan Moffat Society Executive met for a dinner at Moffat House Hotel, followed by an evening of entertainment in the Town Hall provided by William Williamson and others.

Day Seven - Friday was the last day of "The Great Gathering". In the morning we had the AGM, and the evening was a farewell barbecue at the Moffat House Hotel. In the afternoon Lisa and I walked up to the Golf Course on he hills above Moffat for exercise and a look at the great view.

Thanks for being Visitor #2,704 to see this.
